Partial Discharge Sensors

Partial discharge (PD) is a localized dielectric breakdown of a small portion of a solid or liquid insulation system under high voltage stress. Although it does not completely bridge the insulation, repeated PD activity can lead to insulation deterioration and eventual failure. Partial Discharge Sensors are specialized devices designed to detect and measure this phenomenon, forming a critical part of condition monitoring systems for high-voltage equipment such as transformers, GIS, cables, and switchgear.

High Frequency Sensors

Coupling Capacitor

High Frequency Current Transformer

High Frequency Current Transformer

A coupling capacitor sensor (CC) detects partial discharge by capturing high-frequency voltage pulses coupled from the high-voltage conductor. It enables  PD monitoring in medium cables, switchgear, and rotating machines.

High Frequency Current Transformer

High Frequency Current Transformer

High Frequency Current Transformer

A High-Frequency Current Transformer (HFCT) sensor detects partial discharge by capturing high-frequency current pulses on grounding conductors. It enables non-intrusive PD monitoring in cables, switchgear, and rotating machines. HFCTs are easy to install and ideal for both online and offline diagnostics.

Transient Earth Voltage Sensor

High Frequency Current Transformer

Transient Earth Voltage Sensor

A Transient Earth Voltage (TEV) sensor detects partial discharge by sensing high-frequency voltage transients on the surface of metal-clad switchgear. It is a non-intrusive, contact-based sensor ideal for quick screening of PD. TEV sensors are widely used for condition assessment of medium-voltage switchgear.

Acoustic Sensor

Acoustic Sensor

Transient Earth Voltage Sensor

An acoustic sensor detects partial discharge by capturing ultrasonic sound waves emitted during insulation breakdown. It is effective for detecting PD in oil-filled transformers, cable joints, and enclosed equipment. Acoustic sensors are non-invasive and useful in environments where electromagnetic signals are attenuated.

Bushing Sensor

Acoustic Sensor

Bushing Sensor

A bushing sensor monitors partial discharge activity within transformer bushings by detecting high-frequency electrical signals. It is typically mounted at the capacitive test tap or grounding shield of the bushing. Bushing sensors enable early detection of insulation defects, helping prevent catastrophic bushing failures.

Ultra High Frequency Sensors - Cables

Cable Sensor

A cable sensor monitors partial discharge activity within transformer bushings by detecting high-frequency electrical signals. It is typically mounted at the cable near termination or joint or on grounding shield of the power cable. Cable sensors enable early detection of insulation defects, helping prevent catastrophic termination or joints failures.

Ultra High Frequency Sensors - GIS

Barrier Sensor

Barrier Adaptor

Barrier Adaptor

A barrier sensor is a UHF antenna installed on gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), typically mounted on barriers or spacer flanges. It detects partial discharge by capturing high-frequency electromagnetic pulses within the GIS enclosure. Barrier sensors offer high sensitivity and are essential for continuous online PD monitoring in GIS systems.

A barrier adaptor is a UHF antenna installed on gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), typically mounted on barriers or spacer flanges. It detects partial discharge by capturing high-frequency electromagnetic pulses within the GIS enclosure. Barrier sensors offer high sensitivity and are essential for continuous online PD monitoring in GIS systems.

Internal Coupler

Internal Coupler

Internal Coupler

An internal sensor for GIS is a built-in UHF antenna designed to detect partial discharge signals from within the GIS enclosure. Installed during manufacturing or retrofitted, it captures high-frequency EM emissions directly from the source. Internal sensors provide reliable, high-sensitivity PD detection with minimal external interference.

Window Sensor

Internal Coupler

A window sensor for GIS is a built-in UHF antenna designed to detect partial discharge signals from within the GIS enclosure. Installed during manufacturing or retrofitted at dielectric windows, it captures high-frequency EM emissions directly from the source. Window sensors provide reliable, high-sensitivity PD detection with minimal external interference.

Ultra High Frequency Sensors - Transformer

Internal Sensor

Internal Sensor

An internal sensor for Transformer is a built-in UHF antenna designed to detect partial discharge signals from within the Transformer tank. Installed during manufacturing or retrofitted, it captures high-frequency EM emissions directly from the source. Internal sensors provide reliable, high-sensitivity PD detection with minimal external interference.

Installed during manufacturing or retrofitted at dielectric windows, it captures high-frequency EM emissions directly from the source. Window sensors provide reliable, high-sensitivity PD detection with minimal external interference.

Drain Valve Sensor

Drain Valve Sensor

A drain valve sensor is a UHF sensor mounted at the transformer’s oil drain valve to detect partial discharge activity inside the tank. It captures high-frequency electromagnetic signals through the metallic structure without opening the transformer. This non-intrusive sensor enables online PD monitoring in oil-filled power transformers.
